A friend and I fishing barefoot in the creek with cane poles. 1979.
Both of my grandfathers loved fishing and the outdoors. Mom's Dad (above), loved fishing and mushroom hunting. How it is that my Mother is descended from him, I have no idea. Mom made me pose with that goofy watering can while gramps held the crappie.
My Dad's Dad, with a large catfish caught in the lake by our neighborhood around 1978.
There was a mulberry tree that hung out over the lake near our house. When the birds were at the mulberries, handfuls of ripe ones would fall off the branches into the lake. As soon as they'd hit you could see swirls from the carp gulping them down. Dad, my cousin and I discovered that you could catch them without having to wait on a bite by baiting your hook with a ripe mulberry and casting it under the tree. In the 70's, stewardship of a lake meant throwing any carp up on the bank after catching them. It's pretty much the same today but it's Bighead Carp, not Common's like these that are most often the victims.
Gramps, my cousin and I with a keeper.
